Benguela Health has been working on the USAID
Global Health Supply Chain programme – Technical Assistance programme, primarily engaged with the development of policy and the strengthening of governance for the improvement of the pharmaceutical supply chain within the National Department of Health and the Provinces.
Over the years of the programme, Benguela has assisted in a number of key outputs from the programme including the delivery of a blueprint for the proposed reorganisation of the Provincial depots into Provincial Management Procurement Units (PMPUs), the development and completion of a memorandum of understanding between the private laboratory service providers and the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) to provide and share data with regards to Antimicrobial Resistance, and providing support to the NDOH regarding the communications with respect to the introduction of HTA.
Currently, Benguela is working on the National Technical Working Group developing the supply chain strategies for the proposed National Health Insurance and is also part of the national team working on the introduction of HTA more formally into the national health system, and the models that could be used under NHI.
Benguela also supported the Gauteng
Department of Health Medicines Depot in achieving status as a Trading Entity which will provide them with a certain level of financial and organisational autonomy. This includes the development of their proposed service model, a full policy framework and a new organisational structure built on the above.
The contract has been extended to the end of Sept 2025.
